After the fire on a Renfe train yesterday, we are still seeing delays today. The train left Madrid at 14:27, and was destined for Figures, at 16:07 the train caught fire in Ricla.

Train traffic was suspended between Barceloana and Madrid almost five hours. Service was later resumed at 20:40 but a 25-kilometre section of the line is single-tracked between Ricla and Plasencia de Jalón. During the suspension 14 Renfe AVE trains, 4 Iryo trains and 2 Ouigo trains were in service.

3cat reports nearly 13,000 passengers were affected by delays and cancellation after the fire, this was written yesterday at 17:34 and "1h" ago at the time of writing. However, El Correo's article was written and updated yesterday at 23:19, they report more than 17,000 passengers were affected by the fire. Of that 13,000 from 32 Renfe trains, and 4,450 from 11 Iryo trains, four of which were in service at the time. This gives us some idea of the utilisation of this line, do bear in mind that Monday was a public holiday so would differ from a regular work day.

High speed train traffic between Barcelona and Madrid are currently suspended as a Renfe AVE train caught fire at 16:05 near Ricla, Zaragoza. The train left Madrid 14:27 with 283 passengers on board all of whom made it out okay.

Traffic cannot be be resumed until the overhead catenary, which supposedly caused the fire, is repaired and tested. Renfe claims nearly 5000 passengers across 14 AVE trains are affected. Iryo has seven trains that were affected and Ouigo, two.

Looking at the high speed departures reported by Adif, I can at the time of writing this, the 17:20 train to Madrid has not departed Barcelona - Sants. Getting help and information at stations, as always, seems to be cumbersome. elPeriodico has done some groundwork to capture a few passenger stories.

Catalunya's rail service came to a halt yesterday afternoon at two separate times for 30 minutes and 15 minutes respectively.

These issues occured after an upgrade to Siemens train control system, Conventional Train Control (CTC). This, however, wasn't the first incident the system has seen.

The article also has a good description on what the system does, and it's place in the operations centre.

Both Adif and Rodalies de Catalunya are looking to take legal action against Siemens.
