Dunstan Orchard writes about designing the engrave your iPod generator in the 2000's in his role as UI engineer:
I animated the iPod by cycling through a series of JPEGs using JavaScript. The engraving was created using imagemagick, which took the user’s text and returned an “engraved” image to be overlaid on the rear of the iPod. The shipping highlight was achieved by switching CSS classes to change the background color, in the style of a classic yellow fade.
They also provided a demo of how the looked like which brought back memories playing around with this a long time ago. In fact, I remember trying to replicate the Apple website when first learning to HTML and CSS as an exercise in designing good UI.
