Waarom ProRail onbeveiligde overwegen in een steeds hoger tempo sluit

Two programs have been underway in the Netherlands to reduce the number of railway casualties caused by crossings, the LVO and the NABO. The LVO program focuses on making protected crossings safer, whereas NABO focus entirely on unprotected crossings.

The NABO program (Niet Actief Beveiligde Overwegen-programma), which began in 2018, sought to protect or remove all publicly accessible unprotected railway crossings by 2023; however, this deadline has since been extended to 2027. In November, ProRail posted an update to the program, including some numbers.

Out of the 180 unprotected crossings, 171 have currently been addressed. The remaining 9 will be tackled by 2027. From the 171 completed crossings, 133 have been removed, and 33 are now protected. Unless I've understood this wrong, there are 5 crossings that are unaccounted for here. From the 133 crossings that have been removed, 57 have an alternative access road built, 17 have an underpass, 2 have been given a staircase, and 57 were removed entirely. These numbers do actually add up to 133.
